Augustus T-Shirt | Ancient Rome Art Meets Modern Style
Augustus of Primaporta was sculpted in the early imperial period to show Rome's first emperor the way he wanted to be remembered — young, idealized, barefoot in the Hellenistic style, one hand raised mid-address. By that point he'd ended a century of civil wars, consolidated power, and sold the whole thing back to the republic as restoration. The statue was a translation from statesman to god.
The design on this tee crops the marble portrait into a golden disc, which treats Augustus the way Rome treated him: mounted, flattened, reproduced. The pun on reproduction goes without saying.
